Winter Fragrances
– Men’s Grooming Guide

How good can your winter coat or tailored suit actually be without that signature fragrance? It is true that sportier perfumes may have a tremendous impact during summer, but winter calls for deeper and richer scents – such as spicy, warm, woody and musky. Yes, it is advisable to change your fragrance between seasons. What soothes your senses in the month of March may turn out to be totally different from what calms you in December. Winter fragrances should wrap themselves around you while invoking feelings of warmth.
“Look nice and smell good.”
Let’s take a look at the different ways to choose the perfect scent that emits a bold fragrance distinctly and also enhances your wardrobe in winters:
- Go for Heavier Notes: Summer is the time for lighter notes, whereas in winters, it is always better to go for heavier scents. The main reason is that in winters, your skin is dry and perfumes tend to fade faster. Thus, heavier scents stick to your skin for a prolonged period.
- Choose Spicy Perfumes: Spicy perfumes fall in the "warm" category. Winter spices, better known as Orientals, usually have a rich and exotic aroma. It is ideal to go for notes such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom.
- Pick Woody Fragrances: Earthy and woody scents are an excellent option for winters. These rich and heavier scents are reminiscent of burning wood and pine trees. Woody fragrances can also be paired up with citrusy notes for a longer impact. Patchouli, Labdanum, and Oakmoss - all these notes fall in the category of woody fragrances.
- Consider the Base Notes of the Fragrance: Fragrances are available in base, middle and top notes and it is base notes that are the heaviest and last longest. Vanilla, patchouli and sandalwood are often the most popular base notes in winter months. To figure out the base notes of a perfume precisely, you can always talk to the assistants at a perfume counter. They will usually be more than happy to help you out. Also, you can choose to find out about the perfumes online.
- Select Eau de Parfum or Perfume: As winters demand a slightly heavier fragrance, it is a better idea to go for Eau de parfum or Perfume. Reason being, Eau de parfum contains 15 to 18 percent scent, whereas the percentage of scent in Perfume can go up to 30 percent. Eau de cologne, on the other hand, has only about 5 percent scent; thus, it is better to avoid it during the chilly winter months. The crux of the matter is you always need a stronger fragrance in winter.
Recommended Perfumes
Irrespective of the fragrance you choose, it is advisable to moisturise your skin prior to the application of winter scents; this allows a perfume to last longer. So, to sum it up, in winters, banish those fresh and light summer aromas and go for more complex, grounded, and masculine fragrances!
