Summary

  • Alienor Massenet is a perfumer who draws inspiration from the world around her.

  • Her fragrances are shaped by travel, culture, and personal experiences.

  • Her work balances creative freedom with technical precision in modern perfumery.

Alienor Massenet’s fascination with scent and passion for raw materials began early. After studying in Paris, she joined IFF (International Flavours & Fragrances) in New York, where she gained hands-on experience working closely with ingredients. When she later transferred to the Paris office in 1995, she initially planned to stay for six months – instead, she stayed for six years, and in total spent 18 years with IFF. It was during this period that she began developing her own olfactory experiments and collaborating with designer brands such as Estée Lauder.

In 2016, Massenet joined the German company Symrise, a global leader in fragrance development. It was here that she deepened her involvement with niche fragrance houses.

designer fragrances

Massenet’s highly personal style and her drive to, in her own words, “surprise herself” have made her one of the most creative and boundary-pushing perfumers on the market. Like a chameleon, she adapts her compositions to reflect the identity and artistic vision of each brand she works with. Her extensive portfolio within designer fragrances showcases her versatility and her ability to translate ideas and emotions into scent. Notable creations include Chloé’s Eau de Fleurs Neroli, Davidoff’s Run Wild for Her, Diesel’s Only the Brave, Estée Lauder’s Intuition for Men, Giorgio Armani’s Emporio Armani Night, Lancôme’s Trésor in Love, and Paco Rabanne’s Fabulous Me.

However, it is through her work with niche brands that she has truly been able to explore her creativity. Few people know that she also created a fragrance for Penhaligon’s – The Favourite (2020). Today, she prefers to work in long-term collaborations, often acting as an in-house perfumer for select brands.

With her ability to translate places into scent, it was only natural for Massenet to collaborate with the French house Memo Paris, helping bring founder Clara Molloy’s poetic visions to life. Both Molloy and Massenet share a deep emotional connection to places and cultures. Molloy is known for immersing herself in locations for months, capturing impressions that are later transformed into fragrance. It is therefore no surprise that Massenet has created most of Memo’s scents, as well as those for its sister brand Floraïku.

Massenet’s favorite notes are said to be labdanum and myrrh, particularly for their ability to evoke emotion – which is why they frequently appear in her compositions. Each fragrance is often the result of a long and meticulous process. Sometimes a scent is set aside for months or even years before she returns to it, while others have come together in just weeks. According to Massenet, there are no rules – perfumery remains, despite its scientific foundation, an emotional and artistic process.

This sense of place is especially evident in Memo’s fragrances, where many names hint at the destinations they evoke. Among the most successful are Russian Leather, Italian Leather, and Irish Leather, as well as Tamarindo, Ilha do Mel, Marfa, and Granada.

When Clara Molloy and her husband John launched the sister brand Floraïku, inspired entirely by Japanese culture, Massenet once again became the natural creative force. Each fragrance reflects Asian influences in both composition and emotional tone, while Molloy adds a poetic dimension by pairing each scent with a haiku.

The collection is thematically structured – some fragrances draw inspiration from tea, others from wood, resin, or floral and fruity notes. One of the most striking creations is One Umbrella For Two, where green tea blends with cedar and blackcurrant to evoke the scent of freshly baked cake. Only Massenet possesses the creativity and technical mastery to craft something so unexpected.
