Moustache Wax
Best in Test
Shaping the right moustache style requires a special wax since the hair in the moustache and beard is coarser than the hair on your head. If you want the moustache to point upwards, an even stronger wax is required, while a softer wax suits moustaches with a more natural look. Gents has tested a large number of moustache waxes over the years, and these are our five favourites:

Summary
-
Moustache wax provides hold and shape, allowing you to style everything from subtle control to more pronounced classic forms.
-
A good moustache wax should be easy to work into the hair, provide sufficient hold without feeling stiff, and keep the moustache in place throughout the day.
-
Gents’ test panel has tried several products and selected their favourites based on hold, application, scent and how well the moustache keeps its shape.
#1
Benjamin Barber Moustache Wax
Reason: Benjamin Barber Moustache Wax with the classic ingredient beeswax is a solid wax for those who want to twist their pride upwards or simply need serious hold. If you wear handlebars with sharp tips, this is the one to go for, though when applied sparingly it also works well to keep a shorter moustache under control. This is a firm wax, so it usually takes a few attempts before you learn how to soften and shape it properly. On the other hand, once applied it holds its shape exceptionally well. Keeping the wax in your back pocket during the day can help soften it slightly before application.
This affordable wax comes in the popular Black Oak scent with notes of oak, aged rum and sandalwood, yet the aroma is not overly strong or disruptive to other fragrances – a definite plus.
#2
Stern Hungarian Moustache Wax
Reason: This moustache wax, originally named Stern Ungarische Bartwichse, is a true German moustache classic. Unlike many other waxes, this product is soft and creamy when applied and then hardens after a short moment. Because of this, many consider it the obvious choice, as the smooth consistency makes it very easy to apply. The unique formula also allows the wax to be washed out easily with water. Naturally, this also means that it is less resistant to rain than other waxes, which can be considered one of its downsides.
Not optimal for those with very thin hair lacking weight, but otherwise suitable for most – the fact that it is often used in moustache competitions in places such as Austria speaks for itself.
#3
Proraso Moustache Wax Wood & Spice
Reason: Italian Proraso often tops our lists, and this soft wax based on shea butter and beeswax is no exception. The more flexible formula makes application easier than with a hard wax, although it also results in a lighter hold. It therefore suits those who have a moustache a couple of centimetres long or more and prefer a softer, more natural style. The wax carries a scent of cedarwood and Mediterranean citrus, providing a pleasant feeling of freshness.
#4
Mr Bear Moustache Wax
Reason: This is another excellent wax for those seeking optimal hold with beeswax as the main ingredient, and it could just as easily have ranked higher depending on the type of moustache wax you are looking for. Mr Bear is a Swedish brand known for quality ingredients that are 100 percent natural, although the scent here may be more of a personal preference.
The ingredients are 100 percent natural. The waxes are available in three scents: Woodland, which evokes the feeling of a pine forest; Citrus, with the scent of freshly picked citrus fruits; and Wilderness, a green fragrance with a woody base. Woodland is the most popular, but for those who prefer a more neutral option with a subtle citrus note, the brand’s original wax is well worth trying.
#5
Dr K Soap Company Moustache Wax
Reason: A natural and handmade moustache wax from southern Ireland that, thanks to its ingredients, also cares for both your hair and skin. Beeswax and carnauba wax create the hold and styling possibilities, while castor oil and vitamin E add shine, vitality and moisture to your moustache as well as the skin beneath.
The wax has a medium hold and suits those who want simple styling without twisting or curling the moustache. In other words, an excellent all-round wax.
