Best in test: Shower cream

Yes, there is a major difference between shower creams from the grocery store and slightly more premium alternatives. The truth is that cheaper shower creams are often diluted with so much water and thickening agents that you end up using a large amount just to feel properly clean. With a more concentrated formula, you can both reduce consumption and enjoy a richer fragrance experience, as the scent notes reveal themselves far better in concentrated form.

We tested the most popular shower creams on the market, and the test panel agrees!

Summary

  • This article compares shower creams with a focus on cleansing performance, skincare benefits and how they affect the skin with daily use.

  • The best products combine effective cleansing with moisturising ingredients that help prevent dryness while maintaining the skin’s natural balance.

  • Fragrance, texture and the overall shower experience are highlighted as key factors for a more luxurious and enjoyable routine.

Winner: Benjamin Barber Saffron & Leather

Motivation: Saffron & Leather from Benjamin Barber is without question our most popular line. The fragrance blends leather, vanilla, lavender and tobacco with subtle touches of saffron. This shower gel has a smooth and “silky” texture that, to be honest, feels almost like a caress. It simply glides pleasantly across the body and between the fingers. It produces the least foam of all shower creams tested, which the panel appreciated since we know excessive lather often means the product contains ingredients that dry out the skin.
If we have to mention something negative, it is perhaps that the fragrance may feel slightly too subtle, though some users actually prefer exactly that. The feeling after the shower is excellent regardless – the skin feels lightly scented and genuinely less dry than usual. Since we could not resist the temptation, we followed up with Benjamin Barber Body Lotion in the same fragrance, and the effect is unbeatable. Clean and beautifully scented skin that feels hydrated, supple and balanced. The winner of this test is crystal clear!

The shower gel is also available in the exotically sweet-spicy Oud fragrance and Black Oak, which has also won multiple tests over the years.

#2 Truefitt & Hill Sandalwood

Motivation: All shower creams from Truefitt & Hill are highly concentrated and beautifully scented. In this case, however, the signature line 1805 had to step aside in favour of the brand’s newest addition – Sandalwood. The scent feels freshly masculine and gives us subtle 90s vibes, though in the best possible way. This shower gel is destined to become a classic among anglophiles thanks to its creamy lather, masculine fragrance and elegant bottle design. The Royal Warrant proudly displayed on the bottle adds a certain sense of distinction – it genuinely feels special having it in the shower.
Our only criticism is that it can be slightly difficult to get the final amount out of the bottle, though this is a detail we are more than willing to overlook considering how impressive the product is overall.

#3 Molton Brown Re-charge Black Pepper

Motivation: The Rolls Royce of shower creams and a favourite among many. Re-charge Black Pepper reminds many people of Fahrenheit – remember that iconic 90s fragrance blending deep sweetness, masculine spice and a subtle violet accord? Black Pepper is less sweet and contains only a fraction of the violet note, but we dare say that once you try this, you will never go back. The consistency is highly concentrated and economical, meaning this bottle – despite its premium price – is worth every penny. It lasts forever, even for those who are generous with their shower gel or frequently end up properly dirty. The scent is rich and definitely not for the discreet type; it follows you out of the shower and lingers for at least an hour. Black Peppercorn is also available as an EdP for those who want to continue wearing the fragrance throughout the day. A truly excellent purchase!

#4 Floïd Body Wash

Motivation: The shower creams from the Italian cult brand Floïd are not only extremely moisturising and refreshing, they are also very affordable, which places them firmly within the Top 5. This is genuinely excellent shower gel for the money; the two fragrances Vetyver Splash and Citrus Spectre are fresh and perfectly balanced without becoming overpowering.

Floïd’s products are formulated with Haugrol, designed to moisturise, balance and regenerate the skin. They are also highly economical to use, which makes the low price even more impressive.

#5 Byredo Body Wash Mojave Ghost

Motivation: In truth, we could have chosen almost any fragrance among Byredo’s shower gels – we simply mention Mojave Ghost here because its powdery, soapy tone enhances the sensation of cleanliness. As always with this Swedish fragrance house, the quality of the bath products is exceptionally high. Concentrated, refreshing and luxurious in feel. Vegan too.

As with most perfume and branding houses, the price sits at the higher end of the scale, which naturally excludes some audiences, but for loyal Byredo fans this is exactly the product they want. The minimalist and elegant design also makes Byredo as much an interior detail as a bathroom accessory.
