Summary

  • Incorrect shampooing can lead to dryness, irritation and unnecessary stress on the scalp.

  • An effective washing routine is based on two rounds of shampoo, thorough rinsing and the right frequency.

  • The need for conditioner depends on hair type and scalp condition, not a universal rule.

How often should I wash my hair with shampoo?

As a general guideline, avoid washing your hair with shampoo every day. This can be difficult depending on your lifestyle and work, but daily shampooing can dry out both the hair and the scalp, resulting in dry lengths and a flaky, dehydrated scalp. For most people, washing with shampoo 2–3 times per week is enough.

How to shampoo correctly

Many make the mistake of shampooing only once. This loosens the dirt and buildup but doesn’t remove it fully when rinsing, which can lead to residue accumulating on the scalp. This buildup can itch, clog pores and potentially increase the risk of hair thinning.

Start by thoroughly rinsing your hair with plenty of water. Massage a small amount of shampoo into the hair. The dirtier your hair is, the less the shampoo will lather during the first wash — this is completely normal. Rinse out. Repeat the process, and during the second wash let the shampoo sit for 1–2 minutes, especially if you use a shampoo for hair loss or scalp issues. During the second wash you’ll also notice much more lather. Rinse out (not too hot water) and your hair will now be 100% clean.

Conditioner — do you need it?

The answer is both yes and no. It depends on the function you want your conditioner to serve. Does your hair feel dry and dull? Choose a conditioner that moisturises — shine will naturally follow. Dry and itchy scalp? Pick a conditioner that calms and hydrates the scalp. Struggling with hair thinning? Choose a conditioner that stimulates the scalp and helps support and awaken dormant follicles. Short hair without any issues? Then no, you probably don’t need a conditioner unless you simply want a bit of extra luxury in the shower.
