Silphium (likely from the genus Ferula) was a plant that grew in the area around Cyrene, present-day Libya, and was widely known as a spice, medicinal plant, and perfume ingredient throughout the classical ancient times. It was praised by Greek philosophers and authors, as well as Roman emperors and cookbook writers.
Many unsuccessful attempts were made to cultivate Silphium, which could only grow wild in a limited area on the North African coast. This, combined with its medicinal properties, made Silphium the world's most valuable spice, surpassing both saffron and cinnamon in exclusivity. Eventually, the demand for Silphium became so overwhelming that it was harvested to extinction, and the taste and scent of the once-greatest spice in the world were lost forever.
Stora Skuggan's interpretation of this historical plant is created by using aromatic chemicals from surviving presumed relatives of Silphium to create a fragrance chord that resembles the descriptions left behind in historical sources. This is set against a backdrop of ancient incense, wood, and leather.
