PREPARATION
The basis for all effective shaving is the preparation of the skin and a good shaving cream. As with other crafts, shaving is all about the preparation that goes into the result! Shaving in or after the shower, when the bathroom is warm and humid, softens both the skin and the beard hair, which makes shaving much easier. Alternatively, first clean your facial skin in warm water and simply skip the drying procedure. If you have an extra coarse beard and/or dry and sensitive skin, you may need a pre-shave, which you apply thinly and leave for a few minutes to work.
SHAVING CREAM & shaving SOAP
Then we come to the actual shaving cream, and here we do not mean the traditional shaving foam in spray form but a proper shaving cream or a shaving soap, both of which are worked up with warm water and a shaving brush to a creamy, rich lather with high density and provides good protection and optimal glide for the razor. Here we are happy to recommend Benjamin Barber's new shaving cream in a tube (also handy to keep in your toiletry bag) in the scent of Black Oak. Not only is the formula thick and easy to work with - its soft, pastel-like texture means you can work it up with your fingers, even with water, if you don't want to lug a brush on the road - it's also vegan and paraben-free. The popular Black Oak scent is a well-balanced blend of tobacco, oak and leather supported by darker notes of sandalwood and cedar.
If you prefer to work with a hard shaving soap, this is also available in the range. Benjamin Barber's Shaving Soaps are easy to work with due to their high glycerine content and are available in Black Oak, Saffron & Leather and Oud scents and in two sizes. For the standard 100g size, we also recommend a shaving soap cup to store the soap in, making it more practical to work up the lather. Because with a hard shaving soap, it is a requirement to use the whole classic ritual with a shaving brush and you have to work a little extra to get that rich lather.
TIP! If you still think the soap is too hard, use the barber's old trick blooming, i.e. soften the soap by first soaking it in warm water for a few minutes, then just start with the brush. The resulting lather would make any soft ice cream maker green with envy.
THE SHAVE: SAFETY RAZORS & MULTI-BLADE SYSTEMS
We at Gents always recommend that you invest in a traditional, classic safety razor with sharp double blades, as these are unbeatable in terms of close shaving and thus also gentle on the skin. The double blades are also extremely cheap compared to the Gillette blades but at the same time more effective.
