Follicopeptide® – New research reveals a “super-peptide” for hair loss

Follicopeptide® is a Swedish-developed, non-hormonal peptide complex applied directly to the scalp to stimulate hair growth. It is based on many years of research at Lund University and has subsequently been further developed within Swedish biotechnology.

What is it?

Follicopeptide® consists of a synthesized peptide (with no animal or human origin) that targets the surrounding tissue around the hair follicles – not the hormonal causes of hair loss. It is applied daily, left on overnight, and functions entirely topically – meaning it does not affect hormone balance or other parts of the body.

How does it work?

The peptide was developed by identifying an active sequence from a naturally occurring human growth protein called osteopontin and modifying it to allow penetration through the skin and into the hair follicles. It binds to specific receptors (neuropilin-1) in the scalp and activates signalling pathways believed to enhance blood supply and supporting tissue around the follicles, thereby creating a more favourable environment for hair to grow and become denser.

What does the research say?

  • Several studies have been conducted – five in total, including one larger study with more than 200 men with androgenetic alopecia.

  • This study showed a response rate of approximately 70% after around 4 months and an average increase in hair density of around 5–6 hairs per cm².

  • Hair shaft thickness also improved in image analysis – although it was not measured quantitatively.

  • The treatment was applied daily, and improvements were most pronounced between months 4 and 6 – earlier measurements showed minimal change, which aligns with natural follicular growth cycles.

  • Safety studies show good tolerance – no serious adverse events were reported and no hormones were used.

Who is it for and how is it used?

The product is suitable for individuals seeking a topical (meaning externally applied to the skin) alternative to hormonal or systemic (meaning affecting the whole body) hair loss treatments – for both men and women. The most important factor is consistent use: apply once daily (approximately 0.5 mL per 10×10 cm scalp area) and leave on overnight. Expect clearer visible results only after 4–6 months.

How Follicopeptide® compares with traditional treatments

The following matrix provides an overview of how Follicopeptide® compares to two common hair-loss treatments – Finasteride (oral tablet) and Minoxidil (topical solution). The matrix is not intended to be scientifically exact for all values and is based on available studies and indicative data for quick understanding.
