The story of Penhaligon’s began in the Victorian age when one William Henry Penhaligon, a Cornish barber, moved to London and founded a barber’s shop on Jermyn Street in the late 1860s. It was an era of traditional values and discoveries, and Mr. Penhaligon was wildly creative, enterprising and ambitious.

His first scent Hammam Bouquet was inspired by the aromas of the neighbouring Turkish baths or hammams. It was Mr. Williams’ favourite fragrance throughout his life and it still remains one of Penhaligon’s bestsellers.

In recognition of his talents, Mr. William was appointed as a barber and perfumer to the Royal Court.

From an ordinary roadside barbershop to one of the world’s leading perfume makers, Penhaligon’s has indeed come a long way. It has withstood the vagaries of time and has stuck to its commitment to perfume production using only the finest traditional sources and techniques. Even all of its bottles have retained the original design that Mr. William had in his mind i.e. a clear glass adorned with a bow tie-like ribbon around its neck. Penhaligon’s is an enchanting perfume brand with an inspiring story of a trained nose behind it.
